When shopping for cal king sheets it is important to know what type of mattress you have. The cal king mattress should measure 84 inches long and 72 inches wide.

We say "should" because not all mattress manufacturers make the exact same size. California King size beds are also called "Western King Size".

Now, the Standard King, or the Eastern King Size bed, which is the most common king size, measuers 80 inches long and 76 inches wide.

In short, the California King is a bit more narrow, but 4 inches longer which can make a difference for those who are a bit taller.

• What type of material are the sheets?
  The most common materials are cotton, flannel, egyptian cotton, sateen or silk.
  Each material having both pro's and con's. Flannel may be too hot in the summer, sateen may feel too cool to the touch, the silk sheets are obviously quite costly, the cotton sheets may get easily wrinkled...
• Are the cal king sheets "No Wrinkle"? No or low wrinkle means a sheet that can be taken from the dryer and it looks like it was ironed. The benefit of this is obvious.
• What is the thread count? The thread count refers to how may threads per square inch of fabric. A lower thread count may make a sheet that feels a bit rough, and a high thread count will make a very soft and smooth sheet, but too high of a thread count will make the sheet prone to snags which will reduce it's lifetime. A thread count of 250-400 is very nice. Thread counts of 600 to a 1000 will put the sheet into the Luxury Cal King Sheet category.
• What type of stitching is used?
  Is the stitching of the sheet producing a pattern, or is it smooth? It may be hard to see on a photo, but will be described. Sheets with a pattern on the fabric itself can bring a nice design addition.
